Basketball, Drums, and Fun

On Saturday, April 2, 2016, the Harlem Wizards performed at Montclair High School as a fundraiser for Northeast Elementary School. The Harlem Wizards took on the Montclair Knights in a basketball game. The Montclair Knights are made up of Montclair teachers and parents. The game was fun and engaging. There were halftime performances from Hillside Elementary School’s own Drums of Thunder, and there was a mini-basketball game where the players were children from the crowd.

The event was not just Northeast families, but rather felt like a community event. There was even an autograph session with the Harlem Wizards after the game. The stuffy gym did not stop the crowd from cheering, laughing, and having fun. Drums of Thunder was welcomed with applause and a standing ovation after their thundering performance. After the Montclair Knights scored, the crowd would shout out a loud, booming cheer. Overall, it was a great (but very hot!) event.

Animal Shelter fire

It was an average day at the Montclair Animal Shelter, animals going in and out. At about 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 3, 2016, the air conditioning unit in the kennel exploded and erupted into flames. Police and the Fire Department came rushing to get the animals out of the now burning building. By the time that the fire was out, all animals were accounted for and were being brought to safety. Many civilians, including myself, came running to help all the animals and take them home while the staff found a new shelter. I was able to snap photos of the building, and handle a dog until it was brought to a shelter.

There were many people on line to take a dog home with them while the staff found the animals a new home. I was able to talk to one of the staff who was inside the building during the explosion, who told me, “I was handling one of the dogs, when he started shaking. I heard a loud boom, and smelled fire. I got the dog out of there as fast as I could.” There were many animals that I could see, but I handled a dog name Shiana. She was brought, along with many others animals to an animal shelter in Bloomfield. The animals will remain there until the shelter is rebuilt and is safe to hold the animals again.
